    Needs Assessment

    Identified needs can be divided into three basic categories:
    • Development of resources: This includes development and preservation of resources within South Africa, repatriation of resources outside South Africa, and access to international resources, especially databases.
    • Professional capacitation and training: This includes training trainers, heritage professionals, teachers, and development of forums for exchange of information.
    • Outreach (audience development): This includes the need to expand audiences beyond the walls of traditional heritage institutions and to new audiences. There was a consensus regarding the need to use both digital and physical resources, particularly audio-visual materials to reach new and broader audiences

    Needs assessment was conducted through a pre-conference survey and in three sessions focusing on documentation, collection care, and collection development; access and delivery; and project management/program management. Below is a list of the individual needs identified in each session:
