Principles
of Partnerships: Shared Values
Participants
in this project are firmly committed to forging truly bi-national
partnerships across a broad range of institutions. To strengthen
these endeavors, participants in the 1999 Durban workshop drafted
these Principles of Partnership: Shared Values to provide a guiding
workshop for these collaborative projects.
Equity:
-
Mutuality: a clear understanding of what each party can contribute;
everyone bringing something to the table. Each partner should
have something to contribute and something to gain.
-
Reciprocity (e.g.: exchanges & internships).
-
Representation: bringing all relevant stakeholders to the table.
Impact:
-
Should have an impact beyond the individual project. Need to reach
the wider community.
-
Project should result in empowerment, transformation, and capacitation.
-
Consistency & continuity: long-term sustainability.
-
Joint publication and dissemination.
Infrastructure:
-
Organizational capacity on both ends. Reliable points of contact
in both countries.
-
Flexibility.
-
Preferable to work with consortia instead of specific institutions.
-
Institutional ties that do not rely exclusively on individuals.
Communication:
-
Transparency.
-
Continuity and regularity.
-
Continual consultation is essential.
