| Briefing
for Colloquium
We
are bringing you to Durban for two important purposes:
- To
review trends and issues in cultural heritage in South Africa,
evaluate how this field has been influenced by international developments
since 2000, and therefore to make recommendations for priorities
and needs in cultural heritage;
- To
network with colleagues from the US, South Africa, and international
institutions about projects, concerns, and issues in this field.
The starting point for our discussions will be the Needs Assessment
and Priorities developed as a result of the workshop, “Institutional
Partnerships for South African Culture, History, and Education,
that inspired this training program.
To prepare:
- Please
review the needs assessment and training priorities documents
(in your registration packet and at our website, http://www.saculturalheritage.org/durban.html).
- Consider
the questions and issues listed under “colloquium preparation”
on the front of the program. Please feel free to add your own
questions and ideas; these are intended as starting points, and
not as declarative of any particular conclusion.
The first breakout sessions on 5 February will help us to focus
our thoughts for the remainder of the workshop. Discussion leaders
will be provided.
Participants
will:
- Have
the opportunity to more fully introduce themselves, their work,
and their interests.
- Consider
the themes and issues raised by the opening keynote speakers and
roundtable;
- Quickly
review the needs and priorities documents noted above;
- Add
issues, themes, or subjects not covered but that the participants
believe should be addressed;
- Assign
notetakers or observers for the colloquium sessions who can outline
panel discussions and help the second meeting of the group identify
important issues or points for incorporation into conference recommendations;
- Create
a draft list of changes and trends in the cultural heritage sector
over the past three years that could be considered as important
signs of its future direction.
The
second set of breakout sessions on 7 February will allow participants
to summarize and report on their experience at the colloquium:
- Review
results from group observers and notetakers;
- Sift
and collate most important issues that emerged from the colloquium;
- Devise
a list of recommended needs for the future of cultural heritage
in South Africa, with special emphasis on training, resource development,
and access.
- Delegate
a member to report to the plenary session that follows.
