The following information and references might be of use in preparing for the Colloquium discussions.

The 1999 workshop agreed upon the following top priorities for training in the heritage sector:

  • Inter-institutional partnerships within South Africa.
  • Student and staff exchanges (internship/mentoring/shadowing programs – both short and long term).
  • Training and workshops in both countries
    • Workshops in the US, especially to train the trainers
    • Workshops in S.Africa, especially in partnership with international and national organizations as appropriate (including SAMA, etc.). Can be topical.
    • Short courses, in-service training, life-long learning, continuing education.
    • Need for management and marketing training.
  • Forums for exchange of ideas and information
    • i. Face-to-face forums in variety of physical, international locations.
    • ii. Electronic forums to create and strengthen these partnerships and exchanges.
    • iii. National forum to identify issues (such as seeking international assistance with electronic communications).
    • iv. Establish repositories for museum, archival and library information (perhaps regional).
    • v. Establish a listserv of participants in this workshop.
    • vi. Organize a committee that cuts across the different bodies, and that will work to establish a structure to coordinate exchange of ideas and information.
  • Twinning (Pairing South African and US institutions with similar aims over sustained period.)
  • Development of centers of excellence within South African institutions (e.g.. regional conservation centers)
  • Joint publications on issues pertaining to heritage
  • Outreach: Bringing heritage to the people
    • Traveling small-scale exhibits.
    • Exploiting nontraditional spaces where people gather: hotel lobbies, malls, etc.
    • Virtual exhibits: Internet.
    • Radio: exploit S. Africa’s powerful and large listening audience.
    • Festivals and local markets.
  • Project-based learning: (Existing model: Mellon digitization project which incorporates training as well as sustainable capacity.)
    • Oral history projects: Collection, digitization, and delivery, including rural areas.
    • Annual festival of the arts: e.g., Venda, where a formal festival was surrounded by local, informal market in crafts.
    • Multi-purpose centers with networked computers.
    • Curricular projects that deploy students and field experts in independent electronic publishing of materials that will be usable in schools.
