Oral
History Digitization, Preservation, and Dissemination
The partners are the MSU Consortium (MATRIX as
the lead partner), the Centre for Popular Memory at the University
of Cape Town; the Documentation Centre for the University of Durban
Westville; and University of Western Cape/Robben Island Museum
Mayibuye Archives. The project identifies significant oral history
collections and provides equipment and training for South African
staff to digitize and disseminate according to best practices
in the field. Of special interest is the “Voices of Resistance”
module at University of Durban - Westville, which also involves
new interviews with Indian anti-apartheid activists and TRC witnesses.
More than 40 interviews have been conducted thus far and are being
digitized on equipment acquired and installed by Matrix technical
staff. Equipment has also been installed at University of Cape
Town and audio-digitization training provided to enable them to
digitize their collections of over 1000 hours of analog audio
interviews.
