    Traditional Arts Documentation and Education

The partners are the MSU Consortium (MSU Museum as the lead partner), Johannesburg Art Gallery; Durban Art Gallery; Smithsonian Institution Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage; Department of Arts, Culture, Science, and Technology; Robben Island Museum; South African Natural History Museum; Nelson Mandela Museum; University of Ft. Hare; Campbell Collections – University of Natal; and several other arts and culture organizations, universities and technikons. The project incorporates a series of modules focused on traditional arts as refracted through various lenses, including region, genre, in-community or national recognition, economic development, and history. Each module will showcase a selection of artists and their work and would include interpretation based on field documentation with the artists and members of their communities. Photographs of the artists, the making and use of the art forms, and the words of the artists would be foregrounded along with the work itself. Where possible, information would be presented in multiple languages, including the language of the maker and English.
