Conference Report
This
landmark event assembled a diverse, bi-national group to discuss
the training of cultural heritage workers in the new South Africa,
which is dedicated to building inclusive cultural institutions that
address the needs and conserve the history of all South Africans.
Representatives from major repositories and documentation centers,
coordinators of existing South African heritage training programs,
staff and faculty of museums and universities in the United States
and South Africa, representatives of funding agencies, and officials
from South African education and cultural ministries participated
in the workshop.
Central
workshop foci included:
- Information
technologies and internet communications that can build connections
among African institutions, both within South Africa and across
the continent, and assure the preservation and dissemination of
South African History and Culture;
- Identifying
new models for the design and implementation of cultural and historical
projects, including community-based initiatives and oral history
documentation;
- Fostering
innovative partnerships on local, regional, national and bi-national
levels appropriate to the needs of South African culture workers;
- Identifying
projects that can serve as models to support training and the
appropriate use of technology.
